Self-limiting beliefs are the doubts and internal narratives we create about ourselves that hold us back. These beliefs often develop over time and can be shaped by past experiences, societal expectations or feedback we receive from others. They might sound something like - “I’m not good enough,” or “I don’t deserve this.” Thoughts like these might seem harmless but they can significantly affect your confidence, decision-making and overall success.
For us as women, self-limiting beliefs can be especially common as societal pressures often emphasise perfectionism and comparison. But the good news is these beliefs aren't permanent, they can be unlearned and replaced with empowering thoughts. Here are 3 practical tips to help you overcome self-limiting beliefs and unlock your potential:
Challenge Your Inner Critic - the first step to overcoming these beliefs is to recognise what they are. If a negative thought comes up, ask yourself: Is this really true? Questioning these beliefs starts the journey of shifting your mindset towards possibility.
Surround Yourself with Supportive People - surrounding yourself with people who uplift and encourage you can make a huge difference. Seek out mentors, friends or communities that foster positivity and growth - the more you see and hear examples of success, the more you will believe it is possible for you too.
Celebrate Small Wins - self-limiting beliefs often stem from focusing on the things you haven't achieved. Start celebrating every achievement, no matter how small. Speak up in a meeting, take on a new challenge, tick off one thing from your to-do-list.. small wins remind you of your capabilities and build momentum for bigger successes.
"You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them." - Maya Angelou
There are some great books that focus on overcoming self-limiting beliefs. We would recommend:-
1. The Power of Now (Eckhart Tolle) This book helps you understand the importance of mindfulness and staying present. It teaches you to break free from the mental narratives that fuel self-limiting beliefs and develop a more empowered mindset.
2. The Gifts of Imperfection (Brené Brown) Brené's work focuses on embracing vulnerability and imperfection as a path to overcoming feelings of unworthiness. Its a great read for learning how to cultivate self-compassion and stop letting self-limiting beliefs control your life.
3. You Are a Badass (Jen Sincero) This bestselling book is a fun and empowering guide to stop doubting your greatness and living your best life. It is filled with practical tips and stories that challenge your limiting beliefs in a relatable way.
4. Mindset: The Psychology of Success (Carol S. Dweck) In this book the writer introduces the concept of "fixed mindset" versus "growth mindset." They explain how having a growth mindset allows you to overcome limiting beliefs and realise your potential, whilst a fixed mindset keeps you stuck.
Overcoming self-limiting beliefs requires practice and patience but by challenging your inner critic, building a supportive network and celebrating progress, you can shift from doubt to confidence. Every woman deserves to believe in her own limitless potential - starting with you.
Remember - Every garden begins with one seed.
