A safe space - what does that mean? It's a term we come across often and if you are on a journey of personal growth, it is something that is probably of real importance to you.

Whether physical, virtual, or social, a safe space is somewhere we can feel secure, respected and free from harm or discrimination. It’s a space where we can express ourselves freely, share experiences and engage in open dialogue without fear of being judged or marginalised.

"A safe space is not where we flee from the world; it is where we connect with it in a way that is nurturing, healing and affirming." - Bell Hooks

Your safe space should always include:-

RESPECT of different identities, backgrounds and perspectives
SUPPORT active listening, providing resources or guidance, emotional support, empathy and understanding
PRIVACY what is said within the safe space stays within the space unless permission is given to share it
BOUNDARIES established rules or guidelines to maintain the safety of the space
NO JUDGEMENT open expression and discussion without fear of judgement

Creating a safe space for yourself is essential for your wellbeing and personal growth. Here are 3 useful tips:

Set Boundaries
Clearly identify what behaviours, topics or situations you find uncomfortable and set firm boundaries around them. Be open with others about those boundaries and let them know how they can support your space.

Cultivate a Positive Environment
Surround yourself with the things that make you calm and happy - this could be anything from music, candles, books etc and prioritise them. Limit any negative influences and what you consume from media, social interactions or activities.

Practice Self Compassion
Be kind to yourself - treat yourself with the same kindness and understanding you would a close friend. Acknowledge your feelings and avoid harsh self criticism - recognise that it is okay to feel however you feel and to seek space when you feel vulnerable or overwhelmed.

You've got this! 🧡
